Michael Hallam, Welding Instructor and Program Chair

Michael trained for welding at VIU (then Malaspina College) from 1987-1991 and has worked at various welding and fabrication shops, as well as most of the pulp mills on the island. He is an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Welder with a BC Level A Welder Certification, and holds certification in PWP 7&10 and PP101. Michael has been a welding instructor at VIU since 2007 and finds teaching an interesting and rewarding job – he enjoys sharing his knowledge with students.

Tom Bebyck, Welding Instructor

Tom has his Welder Red Seal, Welder First Class Certificate of Proficiency, “B” Pressure Welder with qualifications in SMAW, GTAW, GMAW & SAW Processes, VIU PWP 7 & PWP 10, Alberta Journeyman Boilermaker Certification, Alberta Boilers & Pressure Vessel Act Fourth Class Power Engineer Certificate, CSA, W178.2 Inspector Certification Level III, File 878, and is certified as a Welding Examiner with the Alberta Boiler Safety Association, and as a CWB Welding Supervisor. He was Assistant Program Head and instructor in the Welding Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Edmonton, where he was responsible for the welder training facility that taught welding to apprentices in Heavy Duty Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Millwrights, and Welders, as well as several technology diploma programs. Tom is privileged to teach students in such an exciting career where they can go on to earn a good living, and he enjoys seeing them succeed.

Doug Douglas, Welding Instructor

Doug is a Red Seal Level A Welder with ASME PWP 7 and 10 pipe tickets. He has held certification in CWB, all position SMAW mild steel, FCAW in mild steel and stainless steel, GMAW in mild steel and aluminum. Doug has been working as a welder since 1987, and has experience working in pulp mill construction and maintenance (piping and structural), saw mills, aluminum boat building, and heavy equipment repairs. He has owned and operated his own welding and fabricating business where he offered personalized service to home owners and general contractors to create lasting pieces that stand the test of time. His high school metalwork teacher was instrumental in guiding him to a path of teaching, which he finds very rewarding.

Dave Drury, Welding InstructorPhoto of David Drury

Dave is an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Welder with a BC Level A Welder Certification. He holds current BCP-100, PWP-10 and PWP-7 certifications through the B.C. Safety Authority. He has current ‘B’ Pressure Certification in Alberta as well as current CWB All Position Certification in SMAW and FCAW, and has held pressure tickets in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and BC. He is a CWB Certified Welding Supervisor (W47.1 and W59) and is currently completing his Provincial Instructor’s Diploma. David became interested in metalwork in high school, but took a detour through a career in Healthcare Facilities Management before retraining as a Welder. He worked as a high-pressure journeyman welder for over ten years, has been at VIU as an Instructional Assistant and Welding Instructor since 2007, and was a founding Welding Instructor at the newly established Cowichan Trades Centre starting in 2013. He still finds the various processes of cutting and joining steels amazing.

Quinn Ramsay, Senior Tool Crib Attendant/Instructional Assistant

Quinn is an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman with BC Weld “A” certification. He is registered with Technical Safety BC on pressure pipe welding procedures 7 and 10. He first studied welding at Camosun College in 1998. Working facilities maintenance and oil field construction in four Provinces before joining the VIU welding school in 2013. Stick welding is Quinn’s favorite process. He serves on the Trades and Applied Technology workplace safety committee. Committed to lifelong learning, he is currently enrolled in the Provincial Instructors Diploma program. Quinn feels the modern Canadian welding industry is more diversified than ever with many student opportunities in technology and manufacturing.
