Practical hands-on training

Are you a practical person who likes to learn new skills? Are you looking for a stable career where your skills are always in demand? Refrigeration air conditioning mechanics in high demand. Many students in this program have jobs waiting for them when they graduate.

What to expect

This 34-week full-time program is offered at the Cowichan Trades Centre.

You learn from skilled tradespeople with instructor training. So they not only know how to do the job, they understand how to teach people to do the job. You get theory instruction combined with hands-on training on equipment.

Every Friday you do practicum work with a contractor, learning on the job. You can work with the same employer throughout the program or you can try a few different options. You also do a one-week practicum in the middle of the program.

What you learn

This program gives. You a solid foundation in the fundamentals of installing, servicing, and troubleshooting residential commercial and industrial Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) equipment.  You also get training in customer relations. And you learn how to write technical reports. This includes service reports and operational reports on equipment.  

When you complete the program you receive a VIU certificate and an Ozone Depleting Substances handling certification from Environment Canada and the Province of British Columbia.

You ald receive credit towards the technical portion of the first  year of the Refrigeration Mechanic Apprenticeship program.

Career options

When you finish the program you can find employment and apprenticeship opportunities with refrigeration, air-conditioning and heating companies or contractors. You can also seek employment in building systems maintenance, wholesale and retail sales, controls and instrumentation, equipment manufacturers, and installation and service of equipment.
