Can I take standalone courses?
No. Students must enrol in and complete all training components.
Can I choose which machine I train on?
You will choose your top 3 machine preferences and VIU will make every effort to place you on one of them. Placements are assigned in the order students register for the program and cannot be guaranteed. Requests to train on a different machine will only be considered if there is availability.
Where does the training happen?
The first 6 weeks of the program are taught at:
VIU Nanaimo Campus

The remaining weeks are taught at:
VIU HEO worksite
3800 Ninatti Road
Nanaimo, BC
There is no public transportation to the worksite.
How is the program structured?
Step 1: Foundation Training (RBHC 101T)
4 weeks on the VIU Nanaimo campus
Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Step 2: Technical Training (RBHC 201T)
2 weeks on the VIU Nanaimo campus
3 weeks on the HEO worksite
Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Step 3: Machine-Specific Training
One machine specialization on the HEO worksite
3 to 8 weeks, depending on equipment selection
Step 4: Work Experience
4 weeks, Monday to Friday

Students are responsible for securing their own placement. VIU provides guidance and resources to support this process. VIU does not provide employment or internships for the work experience.
What certificates will I receive?
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate from VIU
- Certificate of Completion (C of C) Road Builder & Heavy Construction Foundation from Skilled Trades BC
- Certificate of Apprenticeship (C of A) Heavy Equipment Operator Technician from Skilled Trades BC
Is this school PCTIA registered?
No, PCTIA is only for private companies. Vancouver Island University is a publicly-funded institution.

Yes, The program and related competencies were developed in conjunction with industry.
Is there a refund policy?
$200 is non-refundable for the Road Builders Program.
Are student loans, scholarships or bursaries available?

Do graduates successfully get employment in the field?
Some graduates get equipment operating jobs immediately, while others start at entry level positions in the industry. As students come from all over BC and elsewhere, a person must have good skills and be willing to travel to where the work is. This is especially true for those who may be new to this field of work.
Is there homework?
Foundation and Technician students can expect 2-3 hours of homework per week.
Do I need supplies?
You need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): hard hat, steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest, hearing protection, pack of 10 gloves (cheap ones) and safety glasses.
Also required: an eye level, a 3-ring binder, paper, pens, highlighter, and a basic calculator. The HEO training site is in a remote location so please bring your own food, coffee, etc.
