Meet the Instructors

Doug Horne

Driver Training Instructor (Class 1-4)

Doug has been a Commercial Class 1 driver since 1979, and has driven on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, as far south as Florida and Washington State, and hauled fuel under contract to Shell. He obtained his instructor’s licence in 2003, and is a certified commercial driving instructor, air brake instructor, air brake assessment officer, DTG/WHIMIS certified instructor, has taught in Victoria and Duncan, and has been teaching at VIU since 2012. Doug sincerely enjoys the challenge of teaching students one-on-one, and the shared satisfaction they achieve their goals.


Kevin Levins

Instructor, Heavy Equipment Operator Program

Kevin has over 20 years of experience in the Heavy Equipment Operating Trade. He has worked in the oil and gas industry in northern BC, in the oil sands in Northern Alberta, done pipeline work in southern BC, and built roads in Calgary. On Vancouver Island, he has developed his skills in underground utility work, paving, and landfill operations. Kevin’s qualifications include a BC Instructor’s Diploma, Heavy Equipment certificate of Qualification on Grader, Excavator, Backhoe, Loader, and Rock Truck. He also has acquired countless industry related certificates. His favourite part of being an instructor is still the interaction with the students and seeing their enthusiasm for the industry.


Stephen McCallum

Driver Training Instructor (Class 1-4)

Stephen has been driving commercial vehicles since 1971, including eight years on the ice roads in Northern BC, Alberta, Yukon, and Alaska. He has instructed driver training for classes 1 through 5, behind the wheel one-on-one instruction, and air brake theory courses, and he is certified by ICBC in the province of British Columbia. He worked for BC Rail for 18 years, and loaded tractor trailers and equipment onto Seaspan barges on the South Coast at terminals in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island. Stephen has been involved in safety training in the trucking and railroad industries, and has been a member of many safety committees involved in promoting safety in the workplace. He enjoys teaching the skills needed to become a safe and competent operator of transport equipment and an asset to employers seeking long term, dedicated drivers to complement their fleets. It gives him great satisfaction to give back a little to an industry that has provided him with the ability to make a good living and support for his family.


Kevin Spence

Driver Training Instructor, (Class 1-4)

Kevin has worked as a professional driver trainer on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment since 1997, and has taught at VIU since 2003. He also instructs Air Brakes, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Defensive Driving, and is a certified Motorcycle Instructor. Kevin's background includes over one million safe driving miles on tandem, three, five, six, seven, and eight axle vehicles. His road experience includes the Yukon, North West Territories, and all western provinces, as well as Montreal, and some of the northern US states. Kevin receives enormous satisfaction helping people achieve their ambitions.
