The VIU Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology is offering instructor education. Completed Instructor Education courses are transferable credits toward the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP). Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Design, deliver and evaluate adult learning and teaching on a continuum of instructional approaches.
- Create positive and engaging learning environments that promote respect for the diversity of learners.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively in the workplace and in the community.
- Act in an ethical and professional manner when working in an adult education setting.
- Integrate critical reflection strategies to stay current in education and bring about change in one’s own practice.

Prerequisites
Evidence of subject matter expertise as demonstrated by a diploma, bachelor's degree, trades certification, substantial workplace experience, or departmental approval.
Course Structure
Courses may be offered in one of two formats:
- Online: offering a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
- Hybrid/Blended: offering a blend of in-person class time and online synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
Courses
IED 322 Delivery of Instruction
Description: Equivalent to the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP) 3220 Delivery of Instruction. Topics include planning instruction, designing, and facilitating learning activities, instructional techniques and processes, giving & receiving feedback, assessing learning, and debriefing learning activities. Participants apply a variety of instructional methodologies and techniques to engage and encourage students to interact with their course content.
Learning Outcomes: All IETL 3220 Delivery of Instruction learning outcomes follow those outlined in the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program, PIDP 3220.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Plan, develop, and deliver lesson plans that reflect appropriate instructional strategies in each of the three learning domains (cognitive, affective, psychomotor)
- Give, receive, and act on feedback to improve instruction and the overall learning environment
- Apply critical reflective practices to peer and self-assessment of the delivery of instruction
IED 321 Curriculum Development
Description: Equivalent to the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP) 3210 Curriculum Development. Topics include theories and approaches to curriculum development, including competency-based and outcomes-based education, instructional design, lesson plans and activities for teaching and learning. This course highlights the importance of alignment between outcomes, delivery of instruction, and the assessment and evaluation of learning.
Learning Outcomes: IED 321 Curriculum Development learning outcomes follow those outlined in the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program, PIDP 3210.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Develop or revise outcomes for a course, workshop, or other learning format using an appropriate curriculum design model
- Create a lesson plan that reflects an instructional sequence with alignment between outcomes, assessment, and instructional activities
- Create a course outline/syllabus or similar document that demonstrates alignment within the learning sequence and clear expectations for students
- Apply critical reflective practices to concepts and issues within curriculum development
